Police authorities in Benue State have discovered a mass grave site in Gbatse village in Usongo Local Government Area of the state.
Police sources said the grave site was discovered following a tip-off, behind the house of a suspected criminal and kidnap kingpin, who ran a syndicate between Ushongo and Kwande local government areas of the state.
“He kills his victims and collects their properties like cars and motorcycles and even when ransoms are paid for the release of his victims he kills them and buries them behind his house,” the source said.
Bodies in the graves are being exhumed and about five of the bodies have so far been identified by their relations.
DSP Catherine Anene, the State Police Command Spokesperson refused to talk about the development when contacted by a section of the media.
“Why can’t you leave it till tomorrow?” she said.
However, sources said the operation has led to the arrest of the ring leader and some of his gang members while others escaped.
“But so far those we arrested have confessed to killing most of their victims. According to their confessional statements, when they abduct their victims, they call for ransom from their relations, collect the ransom and still go ahead kill their victims,” a source said.
