Lance Corporal Sunday Adelola, the alleged rapist of a 300-level student of the Department of Religous and African Studies of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, is to be arraigned in court on Wednesday.
The Ondo State Police Command on Monday said it would arraign Adelola, who was allegedly committed the rape at a military checkpoint along Ikare Akoko-Akungba Akoko road, two weeks ago.
Mr Femi Joseph, the state Police Public Relations Officer, said Adelola will definitely be arraigned in court this week.
“We are taking the suspect to court on Wednesday and if we don’t take him to court on Wednesday, we will certainly take him to court on Thursday, ” he said.
Joseph denied the allegation by some people that the Army and Police wanted to sweep the case under the carpet, affirming that justice must take its due course on the matter.
Meanwhile, the Women for Advancement Group, Ondo State chapter, has commended the Army for dismissing the soldier.
Mrs Kemi Kamar, the state Coordinator of the group, in a statement, urged the police to ensure that the suspect was brought to book.
“Now that the case is with the Police, we want to appeal to the Police to do a proper investigation and charged the case to court without any delay. This will serve as a deterrent to others who think they are above the law,” she said.
Adelola had already been dismissed by the authorities of the Nigeria Army before he was handed over to the police for onward prosecution.
