Some youths from the south west geo-political zone has endorsed the leadership of senator Ahmed Lawan, Yobe North for the ninth National Assembly.

The youths, under the aegis of Distinct Yoruba  Progressives Forum [DYPYF] also endorsed Senator Oluremi Tinubu as the next Deputy Senate President.

The group, which is a coalition of politically inclined youths across all the Six south west states and Yoruba speaking areas of Kwara and Kogi states, made this declaration in Ibadan, Oyo State capital.

Olusuyi Ajayi, the National Coordinator of the group, said out of the senators so far declared elected for the ninth National Assembly, both Lawan and Tinubu are highly favoured by the zoning arrangements and current political sentiments for the Senate Presidency and Deputy Senate Presidency.

“The motivating factor that ignited the passion of very patriotic, ideologically driven and distinct youths from all the Yoruba speaking communities in Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Oyo,  Kwara and Kogi States towards the actualization of Lawal and Tinubu is because both of them are icons of political equity and stability,” he said.

He also stated that the DYPYF is favouring the two high-ranking senators for the Senate leadership positions because of their rich pedigrees, clouts, demonstrable antecedents, intimidating political resumes and for equity.

The group described Lawan, who is the incumbent Majority Leader of the Senate, as a highly respected legislator from the North Eastern zone with rich legislative experience having served two terms in the House of Representatives and three terms in the Senate, with membership and chairmanship of some important committees in both legislative chambers.

Tinubu was also described by DYPYF’s members as a consummate lawmaker, who is a true reflection of an amazon among the female parliamentarians with a high profile matched with excellent performance, which has guven her constituency and Nigeria as whole, qualitative representation.

Ajayi said before the group’s endorsement of Lawan and Tinubu for the Senate leadership position, it embarked on a critical analysis of the ranking senators already elected for the ninth Senate.

“Our careful searchlights on all the ranking senators revealed that the strong attributes embedded in these two senators a very rare to find in many other senators from their zones.

“It is only Lawan and Tinubu that had perpetual displayed their maturity and composures as genuine democrats which stands them out as the most appropriate candidates that respectively befits the exalted offices of Nigerian Senate President and Deputy Senate Presidents come June 2019,” Ajayi said.

The group pleaded with the leaders of the All Progressive Congress [APC] to reason along these choices to lead the red chamber of the National Assembly so that “the Next Level Political Agenda whose foundation was already laid by the free mandate from the masses resulting in the electoral success recorded by the APC during the last general election, can be speedily actualise.”

Ajayi explained that the group’s support for Lawan was not new as it supported his bid for the eighth National Assembly. He said this struggle was unsuccessful through the “betrayal of some APC leaders in 2015.”

He said the group has now re-strategised after beating a retreat, with a new plan of action, code named: “Without Lawan/Tinubu As 9th NASS Senate President and Deputy Senate President the Next Level remain an Un-Completed Agenda.” This, he said is in line with new political realities.

He said the struggle to deepen Nigeria’s democracy can only be achieved when a genuine progressive minded democrat and patriot like Senator Lawan is given the mantle of leadership of the National Assembly.

The group also berated some “reactionary and recalcitrant APC leaders who were involved in Machiavellian and shylock acts of outsmarting Nigerians by installing Sen. Bukola Saraki, a man with high question characters, who ended up debasing the esteemed office of the Senate President.”

It gave a  strong warning that its members  will not treat with levity but will dealt decisively with any Yoruba Speaking Senator who attempt this time to betray the people’s choice, Lawan from becoming the next Senate President.

“Among the strong cardinal programs that instigated our political struggle, total support and risk we took as a major constituent of the APC during the electioneering campaigns that resulted into the free mandates given to all the APC Senators elect of Yoruba extraction is to actualize the Senate Presidency of Lawan.

“These Yoruba youths currently working assiduously have vowed that they will do everything humanly possible to mobilize enough support and coopt some progressive minded APC leaders to help them actualize the enthronement of Lawan as the next Senate President come June,” Ajayi said.
