Three people were injured in gun battle between men of the Ogun Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), and smugglers this week
Abdullahi Maiwada, the Command Public Relations Officer, in a statement said the incident occurred on Monday afternoon, when some smugglers and their accomplices gang-up against an Anti-smuggling Team from discharging its legitimate functions at Owode (Yewa) community in Ogun State.
“The Officers who went on an Operation to save Nigerian economy from the mayhem of smugglers who stocked a place of worship and some houses nearby with rice suspected to have been smuggled into Nigeria. The team faced stiff resistance from some armed criminals inflicting serious injuries on two officers and minor injuries on other members of the team, and further destroyed official patrol vehicles,” he said.
Maiwada said the encounter led to exchange of fire between Customs officers and smugglers with their accomplices. However, the Customs team resorted to tactical withdrawal from the scene for peace to reign. But the hoodlums took law into their hands by barricading the main road leading to Idiroko, attacking any Customs personnel and law enforcement agent seen as they tried to gain access to Customs formations for further confrontation.
The Monday event came at the heel of a similar gunfire exchange between men of the Command and smugglers. That incident left a Customs operative dead and another seriously wounded. 00000000000
