The National Pension Commission  has issued a certificate of operations to the Nigerian University Pension Management Company (NUPEMCO) to commence operations. NUPEMCO is primarily promoted by the Academic State Union of Universities (ASUU), to operate a pension scheme for its members. The refusal of the regulatory agency to approve the teachers’ union’s pension commission for operation was one of the major issues in the dispute between ASUU and the Federal Government.
Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, President of ASUU, confirmed this development in a short message (SMS) sent across to members of the union, yesterday. He said ASUU received the certificate at about 11:20 a.m.
He thanked members of their solidarity during the struggle for NUMPEMCO’s operational licence, and pledged that ASUU’s resolve for reform in the Nigerian university system remains solid.
Ogunyemi also confirmed to the media that ASUU’s leadership was still consulting with its members over offers made by the federal government, in the course of the negotiations between both parties.
